Two cooling structures from the old nuclear power station in the Bavarian town of Gundremmingen, Germany, were destroyed through a planned explosion at midday on Saturday.
The plant functioned as a significant landmark in the town for almost six decades, generating many new employment opportunities and enhancing the local economy.
As part of the nation’s nuclear phaseout and within the framework of Germany’s energy transition strategy, the Gundremmingen, along with the Brokdorf and Grohnde nuclear power stations, were already shut down in December 2021.
The shutdown of the facility had been difficult to accept, but thousands came together to witness the dismantling of the two towers from the town’s horizon.
The local authority, anticipating a big gathering of spectators, established a restricted area near the power station.
As per energy firm RWE, the demolition could be seen from multiple observation points in the area. Certain bars also hosted public “demolition viewing events.”
How the buildings will be destroyed
There were a total of three blasts. The initial one was used to scare off animals and wildlife in the vicinity. The second one resulted in the collapse of the first tower, while the third led to the destruction of the second tower.
Approximately 56,000 tons of concrete came down within a short period. According to local media, the deconstruction of the facility will continue after Saturday’s demolition, with an anticipated completion date of 2040.
