Positive predictions for rain throughout Morocco in the coming week have brought back hope for farmers, who are already getting ready for the new farming season following several years of dry conditions. In regions like Larache, recognized for their strong agricultural output, efforts have increased as farmers start planting alfalfa, barley, and sugar beets earlier than usual.
Local cultivator Abdelssalam Cherki statedMany farmers are hurriedly tilling and planting before the initial rains, anticipating enough rainfall to cut down on irrigation expenses. “There is genuine hope this year,” he remarked, “farmers are eager to believe that this season will finally offer respite.”
An agricultural specialist, Riad Ouhtita, stated that Morocco’s present weather unpredictability generally starts in the southern central region and progresses northward, with initial rainfall often occurring before the end of October.
He urged the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Office for Agricultural Advisory to support farmers in choosing appropriate crops and implementing direct seeding methods to maintain soil moisture.
Following seven straight years of dry conditions, Ouhtita stated, Morocco now has a better understanding of which crops are most suitable for each region’s environment, advocating for a sustainable method to secure the upcoming season’s success.
