Carlo Ancelotti may have a challenging role as a mediator during the upcoming Brazil national team training session following a tense confrontation between teammates Vinicius Junior and Raphinha after Real Madrid’s 2-1 win against Barcelona.
Vinicius clearly was in an emotional condition, having shouted at Xabi Alonso after being replaced during the second half of Real Madrid’s Clasico win. He marched towards the tunnel, but then came back out at the end of the match when tensions flared between the two teams.
This is not the first instance where a fierce club rivalry has caused tension and created problems within the national team. We have examined seven pairs of international teammates who had conflicts with each other.
John Terry vs Wayne Bridge
A kind of international one, this.
The tabloids went into overdrive when news emerged about Terry’s rumored relationship with Vanessa Perroncel, the ex-partner of his former Chelsea teammate.
Bridge had relocated to Manchester City when the controversy began and notably declined to shake Terry’s hand.
Terry lost the England captain role under Fabio Capello, yet still got selected for matches. The final one of Bridge’s 36 appearances for the Three Lions occurred prior to the controversy.
John Terry vs Rio Ferdinand
Him again.
And again, a pretty grim one.
The two defining centre-halves of their era, who enjoyed trophy-laden peaks at the two most dominant teams in the country at the time, it’s not unfeasible to have imagined Terry and Ferdinand as a tournament-winning partnership for England.
They lined up alongside one another 35 times, but never after Terry was banned and fined for racially abusing Ferdinand’s younger brother Anton.
“John Terry has always been the biggest fool in my opinion,” Ferdinand wrote in his 2014 autobiography.
As the captain of England and my central defensive partner, he could have spared everyone a lot of anguish by promptly acknowledging that he had used those words in the heat of the moment but was not racist.
I believe that’s likely what occurred and what the truth is. Anton and I would have been okay with that—however, he never gave us the opportunity. I’ve never actually discussed the case with John.
I no longer communicate with him, but even three years on, I still struggle to forgive or let go of the suffering he caused my family.
Like many of the ‘big six’ teams during England’s so-called golden age, Terry and Ferdinand were not close friends – but they set aside their club loyalties while representing England.
“We weren’t close friends, but we were soccer companions,” he added, remembering his connection with Terry prior to the racism incident.
But he simply remained there, observing as my brother endured everything due to his foolishness. That was the betrayal. He attempted to flee from the consequences of his actions.
Gerard Pique versus Sergio Ramos
It’s a small miracle that Spain became a dominant power, especially considering the intense rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona reached its worst during the time of Pep Guardiola versus Jose Mourinho.
Numerous instances of tension involving players from both sides of the El Clasico rivalry exist, but none as clearly evident as the conflict between Pique and Ramos.
They set aside their differences enough to create a strong defensive team, and there was clearly a mutual respect between them, but it didn’t require a psychology degree to recognize that there was underlying tension.
“When Gerard Pique criticizes Real Madrid, our club, our emblem, and our colors, it does make an impression,” Ramos stated in 2017.
These actions can be prevented and should be avoided, yet occasionally, when all is peaceful and quiet, Piqué feels the need to create some excitement and add more energy to his life.
Mauro Icardi versus Maxi Lopez

Teddy Sheringham versus Andy Cole
Similar to Bridge and Terry, these two spent many years sharing a dressing room in their professional careers – and were notably two essential players in Manchester United’s legendary 1998-99 treble.
But their mutual dislike, which is claimed to still exist today, originates from England’s responsibilities.
“I didn’t feel like playing the game anymore,” Cole said. The Daily Telegraph, recalling how Sheringham ignored him as he came on as a substitute in a 1995 friendly match against Uruguay.
That’s how ashamed I was.
“Snubbed on the line when you’re making your debut as a young kid… I think I hit the bar in the game but I couldn’t get it out of my mind.
We never talked. Unless it was going to result in another disagreement between us… never spoke. We didn’t say a single word while we were there.
Karim Benzema versus Mathieu Valbuena
“I have never encountered someone who would destroy a video for free simply because they love me!” Valbeuna remembered following Benzema’s involvement in a suspected blackmail scheme involving a sex tape.
You shouldn’t consider people as fools.
A court in Versailles eventually ruled that the former Real Madrid star was complicit in an attempt to blackmail his teammate from the French national team.
The aftermath caused Benzema to step away from international football for many years, missing out on France’s Euro 2016 and World Cup 2018 teams. He later made a comeback for Euro 2021.
Robin van Persie versus Klaas-Jan Huntelaar
Some competition for a spot on the team can be beneficial – a constructive rivalry that pushes both sides to improve their performance.
It didn’t seem to be the situation with Van Persie and Huntelaar, who showed little hidden resentment toward each other during their time as Dutch international players.
“Since the 2010 World Cup held in South Africa, there has been tension between them,” said Dutch football icon Ruud Gullit.
It was boiling during Euro 2012 and everything came to a head. The issues have by no means vanished.
Huntelaar was speaking out once more against Kazakhstan, and his previous clash with Van Persie resurfaced immediately.
The situation escalated during the Kazakhstan qualifier when Huntelaar became angry with Van Persie for not passing to him.
The Netherlands did not qualify for Euro 2016. A lesson in unity is evident here.
