Sri Lanka, Oct. 27 — Amy Jones, the opener, scored an outstanding unbeaten 86 off 92 balls as England women secured a convincing 8-wicket victory over New Zealand in their final group match of the Women’s World Cup held in Visakhapatnam yesterday, finishing second in their group.
England’s key spinner Sophie Ecclestone suffered an injury, but Nat Sciver Brunt’s team still delivered an outstanding all-round performance to defeat New Zealand. Opener Amy Jones took the initiative in chasing a target of 169, which was achieved in just 29.2 overs. Tammy Beaumont (40) provided strong support to Jones, contributing 75 runs in the opening wicket partnership. Heather Knight (33) added 83 runs in the second wicket partnership with Jones, who was awarded Player of the Match.
New Zealand’s captain Sophie Devine has concluded her ODI career, but the New Zealand team was unable to provide a fitting send-off for captain Devine.
Earlier, New Zealand’s opening batter Georgia Plimmer scored 43 off 57 balls, hitting 7 fours, while Amelia Kerr managed 35 off 43 balls. However, other players failed to deliver strong performances, and the team was all out for 168 in 38.2 overs. Meanwhile, England’s key spinner Sophie Ecclestone injured her bowling shoulder while fielding, and she only bowled four deliveries, taking a wicket. This proved to be a significant setback for England.
This outcome ensured England took the second position with 11 points, trailing the undefeated Australia, who lead with 13 points. Sri Lanka has secured fifth place after defeating New Zealand, earning five points. New Zealand holds four points and is in sixth place. Australia will face India in the semi-final on October 30 at the Navi Mumbai DY Patali Stadium, followed by the final on November 2 at the same location.
