Sri Lanka, Oct. 27 — Sri Lankan competitors maintained their impressive showing at the South Asian Senior Athletic Championship in Ranchi, India, on the last day of the event yesterday. They secured the first gold of the day when Dasuni Kaushalya triumphed in the women’s 400m hurdles, with Araliya Sathsarani taking silver, marking a notable 1-2 result for Sri Lanka.

Dasuni Kaushalya came in first with a time of 58.66 seconds, whereas Araliya Sathsarani placed second with 59.24 seconds.

In the men’s 400m hurdles event, Sri Lanka’s talented athlete Ayomal Akalanka secured a silver medal by finishing in 50.29 seconds.

In the men’s javelin throw event, Sri Lanka took the lead as Rumesh Tharanga delivered an outstanding performance with a throw of 84.29 meters, securing the gold medal. Sumedha Ranasinghe also achieved success by winning the silver with a distance of 81.62 meters.

Olympic athlete Dilhani Lekamge once again took first place in the women’s javelin throw competition, securing a gold medal with an outstanding performance of 60.41 meters, establishing a new record.

Harsha Karunaratne achieved an outstanding time of 1 minute 51.96 seconds, securing the men’s 800m gold medal. He is the older brother of Olympian Thurushi Karunaratne. In the women’s 800m event, Thakshima Nuhansa claimed the silver medal with a time of 2 minutes 06.51 seconds.

In the first event of the last day, Sri Lankan athletes Rumesh Tharanga, Harsha Karunaratne, Dasuni Kaushalya, and Dilhani Lekamge secured gold medals, raising their total gold count to 12.

Sri Lanka’s Shafiya Yamick and Jithma Wijethunga advanced to the women’s 200m final, which was set to take place last night.

On Saturday, Sri Lanka’s 400m champion Kalinga Kumarage claimed the men’s 400m gold medal with a time of 46.21 seconds, while Kalhara Indupa secured third place with a time of 46.81 seconds. Tharindu Dasun also stood out in the men’s high jump, taking home the gold with a remarkable jump of 2.17 meters.

On the second day, Sri Lanka’s 100m men’s and women’s relay teams delivered outstanding performances to claim gold medals. The women’s 100m relay squad included Dhananjana Fernando, Amasha de Silva, Rumeshika Ratnayake, and Shafiya Yamick. The men’s 100m gold medal team consisted of Pramuditha Silva, Sandun Diyalawatte, Indusara Vidudhan, and Chamod Yodasinghe.

Shafiya secured the women’s 100m gold on the opening day, while Amasha de Silva claimed the 100m silver and Chamod Yodasinghe took the men’s 100m gold. Sri Lanka showcased the fastest South Asian athletes in both men’s and women’s categories during this competition. Shafiya and Chamod both established new meet records in the 100m events.
