Sri Lanka, Oct. 27 — Despite losing two of their group stage matches, the girls’ 33-member basketball team from Sri Lanka maintained hope of progressing to the quarterfinals, whereas the boys’ team faced a heartbreaking elimination from the 3rd Asian Youth Games 33 Basketball event held in Manama, Bahrain yesterday.
In a high-stakes encounter in Pool B, the Sri Lanka women’s team lost to Thailand with a score of 13-18 in Match 16, after previously suffering a 11-17 loss against Indonesia in Match 13. Although they faced two setbacks, their previous wins over Maldives (19-14) and Palestine (20-14) have maintained their hopes of advancing, as the top four teams from the pool will move on to the knockout rounds.
The Sri Lankan boys’ 33-member basketball squad faced a harsh elimination following two close losses, each decided by just one point. They fell 16-17 against Saudi Arabia in Match 11 and lost 19-20 to Kazakhstan in Match 14, even though they had secured two strong victories the day before, defeating Yemen 22-16 and Bangladesh 21-6.
Only two teams were able to move forward in the boys’ pool, resulting in Sri Lanka’s hard work going unrecognized even though they showcased impressive overall results and a determined attitude.
