Dar es Salaam. Tanzania has penned a new page in African football history following the qualification of four of its clubs to the group stages of the continental club competitions for the 2025 season.
Top teams in the Mainland Premier League, Young Africans (Yanga) and Simba, have secured their places in the CAF Champions League group stage, while Azam FC and Singida Black Stars have moved on to the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.
This is the first instance in the nation’s football history where four Tanzanian teams have achieved this milestone within one season.
Yanga confirmed their qualification by beating Malawi’s Silver Strikers 2–1 in total. The current Mainland champions delivered a strong performance at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, with goals from Dickson Job and Pacome Zouzoua.
The outcome secured their consecutive qualification for the Champions League group stage, highlighting their rising prominence in African club football. Meanwhile, Simba accomplished this historic feat by defeating Eswatini’s Nsingizini Hotspurs.
The Msimbazi Reds, who have regularly ranked among Africa’s leading teams in recent years, secured their place following a powerful home game in Dar es Salaam. In the Confederation Cup, Azam FC made a strong impression by defeating Zanzibar’s KMKM 9–0 on aggregate, highlighting their offensive prowess and strategic organization. The Ice Cream Makers will now be participating in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time — a significant milestone for the club based in Chamazi.
Singida Black Stars made history by advancing to the group stage following a 4–2 aggregate victory over Flambeau du Centre from Burundi.
The win highlights the club’s consistent development and increasing aspirations within the continental competition, even though it is among the youngest teams participating.
The achievements of the four teams demonstrate Tanzania’s growing influence in both regional and continental football.
It also highlights the advancements achieved by the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) and regional clubs in enhancing professionalism, facilities, and competitive strength.
Tanzanian supporters are now looking forward to the CAF draw for the group phase, which is set to occur on November 3 in South Africa.
The selection will decide the upcoming rivals for Yanga, Simba, Azam, and Singida as they aim to keep the Tanzanian flag flying high throughout Africa.
