Dangote Cement Plant, Obajana, has launched its 2025 Sustainability Week with a range of lively events that highlight sportsmanship, learning, and collaboration within the community, themed “Sustainable Progress: Honoring Development and Alliances.”

The yearly event, which started on October 24, has grown this year to feature a wider array of programs designed to support comprehensive community growth, as stated by the company on Wednesday.

The inaugural event established the mood for a week filled with interaction and cooperation, involving individuals from Dangote Cement’s employees and nearby local communities. A key highlight of the celebrations was a soccer competition that embodied the essence of teamwork and healthy rivalry.

The final match of the competition, which took place on October 29, 2025, at the Obajana Academy Field, resulted in the Oyo Community Football Team being crowned champions following a exciting 1–0 win against Dangote Cement Transport.

The game marked the conclusion of several days filled with thrilling matches involving teams from the Dangote Cement Obajana Plant, Dangote Cement Transport, and local communities.

The sports gathering was created not solely to encourage physical health and leisure but also to enhance connections among staff and local residents—encouraging shared respect and cohesion.

The last game attracted a passionate audience and was joined by top management, including Plant Director, Mr Azad Nawabuddin; CGM Maintenance, Mr Panjala Sreedar; CGM Production, Mr John Gwong; and GM Special Duties, Mr Ademola Adeyemi, along with other officials.

The event ended with applause and praise from attendees and visitors, who commended the effort for highlighting Dangote Cement’s enduring principles of teamwork, diversity, and environmentally responsible community growth.

Alongside the sports events, there was an Inter-School Spelling Bee and Quiz Competition that drew ten secondary schools from the local areas. This competition provided students with an opportunity to demonstrate their academic skills and inquisitive minds.

Following multiple rounds of fierce competition, Golden Vessels Academy, Obajana, was declared the winner of the Spelling Bee. The event showcased the company’s dedication to promoting education and cognitive growth among children, inspiring them to strive for academic excellence and leadership.

During his speech at the event’s launch, Plant Director Azad Nawabuddin outlined the rationale for the company’s enhanced Sustainability Week initiatives.

Our dedication to sports facilities and programs reflects a core commitment to the overall health and happiness of our community,” he stated. “The football competition we observed today goes beyond offering entertainment—it fosters character development, imparts essential life lessons, and establishes lasting connections between our organization and the communities we support. These ties, developed on the field, lead to more robust and cooperative partnerships across all areas of our community involvement.

The head of HAM-Admin/HR, Mr. Peter Agba, further emphasized the company’s strategic emphasis on integrating physical and mental growth.

Our combined emphasis on sports and educational programs such as the Spelling Bee contest reflects a conscious plan to develop both the physical and mental skills of our community’s members,” Agba stated. “We feel that this well-rounded method—involved young people through sports while challenging their intellect through academic contests—lays the groundwork for lasting community development and empowerment.

The successful initiation of the 2025 Sustainability Week establishes the rhythm for a series of events featuring environmental projects, health promotion activities, and training sessions. This year’s broader schedule demonstrates Dangote Cement’s growing commitment to sustainability—a perspective that acknowledges the link between physical health, mental wellness, education, and environmental responsibility.

The organization reaffirmed its dedication to ongoing interaction via quarterly sports activities and consistent educational programs, making sure that community upliftment is a continuous process throughout the year, not just a single event.

As the week progresses, Dangote Cement stays committed to advancing significant progress through partnership, creativity, and ethical business practices. By incorporating sports and education into its sustainability approach, the company keeps showing how businesses can promote harmony, develop talent, and make a long-term positive difference in the communities they serve.
