The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has declared the celebration of its 20th anniversary, highlighting two decades of committed work in overseeing and influencing the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

Founded on October 31, 2005, under the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA) 2005, which has since been superseded by the Electricity Act 2023, NERC has been instrumental in guiding the development of Nigeria’s power sector.

Over the last two decades, the Commission has supported changes that promote openness, responsibility, safeguarding of consumers, and long-term development within the industry.

A statement issued by the Commission’s leadership noted that the anniversary event highlights the NERC’s impressive progress, starting from the initial difficulties faced during its creation, through the regulation of the separated power sector, the privatization of essential assets in the supply chain, and the supervision of the Nigerian Electricity Market from the post-privatization and interim market phases to the Transition Electricity Market, along with several other significant achievements.

As a way to celebrate the achievement, the Commission will organize a range of events and initiatives designed to highlight its accomplishments, involve key participants, and establish a progressive vision for the future of electricity in Nigeria.

Representatives from the government, business sector, development organizations, and consumer protection groups will gather to review the industry’s advancements, exchange perspectives, and reaffirm their dedication to creating a dependable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly electricity supply system.

In advance of the celebration, Dr Musiliu Oseni, vice chairman of NERC, stated, “The 20th anniversary is more than just a milestone; it’s a reaffirmation of our mission to safeguard consumers, encourage investment, and maintain fairness within Nigeria’s power industry. We are dedicated to implementing changes that provide real benefits to Nigerians.”

Key elements of the event will involve a technical session with panel discussions led by renowned figures in the power industry; a health and wellness session; a debate competition focused on energy-saving methods for high school students; and a special dinner to recognize pioneering and late employees, along with former chairmen and commissioners.

The declaration mentioned that the aforementioned initiatives aim to promote cooperation, creativity, and public involvement within the industry.

As NERC envisions the next 20 years, the Commission continues to be committed to its goal of overseeing the electricity supply sector in the public’s best interest, ensuring a balance between the requirements of consumers and operators, and aiding Nigeria’s shift towards sustainable energy.
