Samsung Electronics announced on the 30th that its semiconductor business operating profit for the third quarter, July-September, reached 7 trillion Korean won, almost doubling the 3.86 trillion Korean won from a year earlier. The semiconductor division contributed 57.3% of the total operating profit (12.2 trillion Korean won), indicating a quick recovery from previous weak performance. Compared to the semiconductor operating profit of 400 billion Korean won in the second quarter, this quarter’s number increased by 16.5 times. Notably, sales of memory semiconductors amounted to 26.7 trillion Korean won, up 20% from a year ago, setting a new record for a single quarter. When Samsung Electronics released its preliminary sales and operating profit figures for the third quarter on the 14th of last month, the securities industry had anticipated the semiconductor business operating profit to be around 5 trillion Korean won, but the actual result surpassed this expectation.
On the same day, Samsung Electronics announced, “We are currently in mass production and selling HBM3E to all customers,” officially verifying the delivery of 12-high HBM3E for NVIDIA. Earlier, Samsung’s HBM3E had not passed NVIDIA’s quality assessments, causing it to trail behind SK Hynix in the HBM market.
Regarding overall performance, Samsung Electronics reported a 8.8% year-on-year increase in third-quarter revenue across all business units, reaching 86.0617 trillion South Korean won, while operating profit climbed 32.48% to 12.1661 trillion South Korean won.
The consumer electronics segment experienced a 1% drop in revenue compared to the previous year, reaching 13.9 trillion Korean won, and moved into an operating loss of 100 billion Korean won. Nevertheless, the smartphone division remained steady, supported by the ongoing success of the Galaxy Z Fold7, which was launched in July of this year. Revenue from the smartphone and network division rose 12% year-over-year to 34.1 trillion Korean won.
