A picture of a Peruvian congresswoman with her toes being trimmed by a helper has caused debate.
As reported by international media sources such as the Daily Mail and Peru21 on the 3rd, a photograph has emerged in Peru depicting Lucinda Vasquez, a female member of parliament, sitting on a couch and speaking on her phone while her assistant trims her toenails, leading to widespread public anger.
Local news outlets stated that Vasquez had her staff carry out several personal errands not connected to their job responsibilities, including making her breakfast.
In a statement, Vasquez stated, “This is an effort to control information and misrepresent my legislative work,” noting, “Previous assistants are inventing details for political motives.” She highlighted, “These actions aim to cause confusion without any connection to the public’s benefit,” and advised, “Don’t be misled by unfounded stories.”
The disputed image is believed to have been captured in November of the previous year. Demands for punishment towards Vasquez are increasing among members of Congress. The Peruvian Congress Ethics Committee is now examining if a formal inquiry should be launched into the claims of misuse of authority against her.
The head of the Peruvian Congress said, “This is a degrading situation for congressional employees,” and added, “These types of events should not happen, and those involved should face consequences. I trust the Ethics Committee will handle it properly.”
Nevertheless, the former assistant who trimmed Vasquez’s toenails told local media, “The congresswoman was diagnosed with cancer and her health had worsened, so I took care of trimming her toenails for her.”
