Conflict increased on Monday at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, where students, youth representatives, and employees organized a non-violent demonstration, alleging that the university’s management is involved in corrupt practices, misuse of power, and a decline in ethical standards.

The demonstration, organized by the National Youth Council of Nigeria’s Ekiti State Branch, along with the Association of Southern Nigeria Youth Congress, disrupted campus operations as protesters called for the immediate dismissal of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, and the removal of the university’s Governing Council Chairman, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN).

The demonstrators held signs displaying slogans like “Enough with corruption at FUOYE,” “Moral decline under Prof. Fasina is undermining our spirit,” and “Tinubu, put the FUOYE VC on hold immediately.”

Viral images on social media and a statement released to PUNCH Online on Monday disclosed this.

The chairman of NYCN, James Bankole, referred to the situation as a “major crisis that risks destroying FUOYE,” alleging that the university’s administration is involved in “a deliberate scheme of corruption, financial irresponsibility, and ethical decline.”

PUNCH previously mentioned on Sunday that the President of FUOYE SUG, James Adio; General Secretary, Ayorinde Alao; and Public Relations Officer, David Abiola, indicated that the student organization would not remain passive in the face of unauthorized gatherings on campus or any disturbance of peace and academic operations.

Officials of the SUG, in a statement entitled “Letter of resistance and warning against the National Youth Council of Nigeria protest at FUOYE,”explicitly warned NYCN leadership about “plans to transform FUOYE into a venue for demonstrations and meetings.”

The Executive Committee has been turned into a tool for personal gain and freedom from consequences.

“This is not about governance; it’s an open financial exploitation scheme,” Bankole claimed in the statement.

He claimed that the Council Chairman had moved all Council meetings and the current Vice-Chancellor selection process to Abuja in violation of ministerial instructions — a step he described as “financial sabotage against the Nigerian state.”

Bankole also criticized what he described as “the institutionalization of sexual exploitation and abuse” at FUOYE, referencing several reported incidents of harassment and alleged attempts to conceal them.

The NYCN and ASNYC stated that they are moving their offices to the FUOYE campus until their requests are fulfilled.

Their requests involve the immediate halt of Prof. Fasina’s position, dismissal of Senator Ndoma-Egba, a detailed examination of FUOYE’s financial records, and an unbiased investigation into claims of sexual harassment by senior faculty members.

“We won’t depart until each and every request is fulfilled,” Bankole declared.

The demonstration occurs against the backdrop of multiple appeals from young groups directed at President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Education, and anti-corruption bodies, accusing them of widespread corruption, misuse of authority, and interference in the selection of the Vice-Chancellor.

By the time this was published, the university officials and the Governing Council had not released a formal statement.

Our reporter’s attempts to obtain a response regarding this recent event proved unsuccessful, as calls to the Special Adviser on Media to the VC, Dr Wole Balogun, were not being connected.

Meanwhile, PUNCH Online had alsoearlier reportedIn October, the university cautioned the leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities within the institution to stop spreading false information and harmful propaganda about the Vice-Chancellor, whom they alleged was engaging in political tactics before the upcoming governorship election in the state.
