Sri Lanka, Nov. 3 — The Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA), a member of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, stated yesterday that it will back the Nugegoda gathering organized by various opposition parties on the 21st of this month, even though the SJB has publicly announced it will not participate in the event.
The Deputy Leader of the TPA, MP Palani Digambaram, told the media in Hatton that the event held to boost public backing against the Government was a positive initiative.
Digambaram stated that the government had been in power for a year, and the opposition was closely watching its actions. He emphasized that it is now time to take steps, as the government has not yet met its commitments.
He mentioned that the President pledged to raise the daily wages of plantation workers to Rs.1,700, with ongoing talks taking place between the Government and the companies. He also stated that he was informed that the plantation companies have agreed to raise salaries by only Rs. 1,500, and it has been proposed that the Government will cover the remaining amount for the companies.
Digambaram also mentioned that if the wages of estate laborers are raised by Rs.350, combined with their base salary and distributed to the estate workers, he would offer complete backing from his coalition to the Government.
