Anthropic plans to open a branch in South Korea early next year and fully enter the local market. Anthropic, the firm that created the generative artificial intelligence (AI) model ‘Claude,’ is seen as a major rival to OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.

On the 5th, the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Committee revealed that Lim Moon-young, the committee’s permanent vice chairman, held a meeting with Ben Mann, co-founder of Anthropic, to explore the company’s intentions to enter the Korean market and possible partnerships.

At the meeting, Ben Mann said, “Korea’s use of Claude is among the top five globally,” and commended, “Korea is the most eagerly awaited AI market in the world.” He also mentioned, “In addition to Japan and India, we intend to open an Asia-Pacific regional office in Korea early next year.”

Lim Moon-young stated, “The dangers involved in AI model development should not be ignored,” and further mentioned, “We greatly appreciate Anthropic’s work in developing secure AI models.”

Lim added, “Secure AI models are crucial for building an ‘AI foundational society,” and stated, “We anticipate strong collaboration between both parties after Anthropic opened a branch in South Korea.”
