Isaac Makokha aims to elevate his bronze medal won at the 2022 Brazil Deaflympics when he participates in this year’s event in Tokyo, Japan, from November 15 to 26.
In Caxias do Sul, Makokha, 33, created history by becoming the first Kenyan deaf golfer to secure a medal at the Games.
Tokyo appears for the second time in thefather of one. The veterinary laboratory sports club athlete is part of Team Kenya with Adan Wario, Gilbert
Alikula and young star Jacinta Njeri, a newcomer.
Speaking to the media following a practice session at Vet Lab, Makokha mentioned he is full of energy and can’t wait for the Deaflympics to begin.
“I have trained extensively. I believe my body is in good condition, and I am confident I will turn that bronze medal from Brazil into a gold one when I go to Tokyo,” Makokha stated.
Makokha mentioned that he drew inspiration from the Brazil event, which he has continued to work on, giving him the confidence to secure a gold medal this time.
“John Allen is a formidable rival, but I’m prepared to confront him directly. I believe I can defeat him this time, as my body is filled with energy,” he stated.
Allen triumphed in golf in Brazil.
To be eligible for the Tokyo Deaflympics, Makokha defeated 15 other local deaf golfers in various Strokeplay and matchplay tournaments.
He highlighted his victory at the 2025 NCBA Railway Invitation Golf Tournament in September as one of the accomplishments that boosted his assurance for a strong performance in Tokyo.
At that competition, Makokha defeated skilled golfers, including reigning champion Michael Karanga.
I have taken part in multiple tournaments and have earned several medals and trophies. The golfers in the current Sunshine Development
East Africa Swing series, in which I am also involved, are highly competitive. I have gained a lot from them, and this has helped me prepare for Tokyo,” he said.
Makokha has highlighted the shortage of equipment as one of the key difficulties he faces in his business.
Team Kenya’s deaf golf coach David Kihara predicted that Makokha would excel in Tokyo.
“He has trained exceptionally well, participated in multiple challenging competitions, and I believe this time he is prepared to deliver something greater than a bronze medal,” said Kihara.
