LG Electronics has provided machinery for the manufacturing of Apple’s iPhone for the first time.
An Indian economic news platform, Economic Times, reported on the 5th that “LG Production Technology Institute provided automated manufacturing system equipment for the Apple iPhone 17 to factories in India managed by Foxconn, Tata Electronics, and Pegatron.” LG Production Technology Institute, an entity that creates production equipment and infrastructure for LG Electronics, has recently broadened its focus to encompass smart factories and semiconductors.
Although LG Display and LG Innotek, subsidiaries of LG Electronics, have provided iPhone parts like screens and camera modules to Apple, this marks the first instance where LG Electronics has supplied manufacturing machinery for the creation of completed iPhone units. This is considered a broadening of collaboration with Apple beyond just supplying components.
Apple has recently made a substantial shift in its iPhone manufacturing, increasing production in India rather than China, in response to tariff risks and the expanding Indian market. Since the beginning of iPhone production in India in 2017, the company has been manufacturing the entire iPhone 16 series in the country since last year. A source from the technology sector stated, “It is notable that Apple, which is diversifying its supply chain, has chosen LG Electronics’ equipment to ensure stable initial production,” and further mentioned, “As Apple’s manufacturing volume in India grows, the supply of equipment could also rise.”
By adhering to Apple’s quality requirements and providing equipment, LG Electronics is now anticipated to receive more orders from other companies. Additionally, after the listing of LG Electronics’ Indian subsidiary, this is expected to aid in increasing its presence in India. LG Electronics leads in both sales and market share within the Indian home appliance sector.
The Economic Times also stated that “LG Electronics is exploring the possibility of moving some of the production units involved in manufacturing electronics, displays, and advanced components from South Korea, China, and Vietnam to India.”
