The Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) for Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, led a high-level meeting with officials from Pak Star Automobiles and electric vehicle (EV) bike manufacturers. The discussion focused on initiatives, targets for domestic production, and policy matters related to the EV sector in Pakistan. Throughout the meeting, Haroon Akhtar Khan highlighted that producing EV bike parts locally would significantly benefit the national economy and consumers. He mentioned that a required local manufacturing percentage has been established during the second phase of the first year’s plan to boost indigenous production capabilities. Khan reaffirmed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s objective is to support local industrialists through specific incentives, fostering sustainable development in the country’s manufacturing industry.

Industry advocates expressed worries about the recent rise in sales tax on electric bicycles, from 1% to 18%, and called on the government to reconsider the move. Khan reassured attendees that the government is fully dedicated to addressing all problems encountered by sellers and producers, and will offer incentives to aid the sector’s growth. Emphasizing the environmental and economic advantages of moving towards electric transportation, Khan mentioned that the transition to electric bikes will greatly decrease pollution and help reduce the country’s petroleum import costs. Additionally, local manufacturing of electric vehicle parts will create new job opportunities and boost industrial development. Khan stressed that the EV Policy aims not only to encourage industrial growth but also to maintain environmental sustainability. He instructed the Engineering Development Board (EDB) to engage with electric bike manufacturers and retailers to identify obstacles and suggest effective solutions for the industry’s advancement.

In the meantime, Haroon Akhtar Khan paid a visit to the Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC). During this visit, the CEO of PIDC provided Haroon Akhtar Khan with an overview of the corporation’s performance, current projects, and upcoming plans. The discussion also covered important developments such as the Master Plan for the Karachi Industrial Park, the land lease policy for the Bin Qasim Industrial Park, and the creation of a customs bonded warehouse. Haroon Akhtar Khan pointed out that PIDC is the foundation of the nation’s industrial framework and plays a vital role in executing the new industrial policy. He mentioned that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision aims to develop a robust industrial base and generate job opportunities throughout Pakistan. Emphasizing the importance of the Karachi Industrial Park, Khan stated that its development will boost national exports, create new investment opportunities, and reinforce Pakistan’s industrial system.

According to the new industrial policy, more support will be provided to domestic industries, he mentioned, noting that PIDC’s involvement will be essential in achieving successful execution of the policy structure.

Khan reiterated the government’s dedication to industrial reforms, openness, and contemporary infrastructure, emphasizing that efficiency and responsibility in current PIDC initiatives continue to be key focuses.

He determined that a thorough plan is being created to enhance PIDC’s role, making it more efficient and proactive in promoting sustainable industrial development in Pakistan.
