The Nigerian Society of Engineers, in partnership with MIDAS IT from India, has provided engineering software worth 17.4 million dollars to 15 Nigerian universities.

The group stated that the initiative aims to enhance engineering education in Nigeria.

Several universities that have benefited include: Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, University of Benin, University of Lagos, Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, University of Abuja, University of Maiduguri, Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, Kogi, and others.

The program seeks to improve hands-on design expertise and foster technical skills within engineering students, especially in areas such as civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering, along with other related disciplines.

The President and Chairman-in-Council of NSE, Margaret Oguntala, made these remarks during the official handover/presentation of engineering software packages in Abuja.

She characterized the action as a major step toward boosting engineering capabilities and improving the standard of education in Nigerian schools.

This instant offers us a significant chance to speed up effective measures in promoting engineering education and career growth within Nigeria.

It is our shared responsibility to direct, assist, and motivate them to achieve their highest possible abilities. By implementing organized mentorship and continuous exchange of knowledge, we can prepare the upcoming generation to steer the engineering field with foresight, skill, and outstanding performance.

“As the world keeps adopting the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it has grown more essential for us as a nation to establish intentional routes for our young inventors to move from classroom ideas to practical implementations,” she stated.

Oguntala, therefore, called on the universities that are gaining advantages to step up their efforts in bridging the divide between academic institutions and the business sector.

“By taking this approach, we will guarantee that our engineering students are thoroughly equipped to perform efficiently and with self-assurance in their professional careers right after they graduate,” she stated.

Oguntala advocated for intentional initiatives to offer organized guidance and promote the exchange of knowledge, aiming to equip students for leadership positions within the engineering field.

“As the world keeps adopting the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it has become more important for us as a nation to establish clear routes for our young inventors to move from classroom ideas to practical uses,” she added.

The head of the NSE urged the Federal Government to enhance mutual collaboration with India in fields such as technology exchange, skill development, and infrastructure growth.

Oguntala, in expressing gratitude to MIDAS IT of India for the generous contribution, stated that the Republic of India, via the company, has proven to be a genuine ally of Nigeria by aiding Nigeria’s development goals through the delivery of top-tier information technology solutions.

“This collaboration is truly beneficial as we keep working to enhance the skills of our young students before they graduate and enter the workforce,” she stated.

She therefore, urged the Nigerian federal government to enhance its collaboration with the Indian government.

The Managing Director for the Africa and UAE region at MIDAS IT Co, Mr. Naga Anne stated that technology must be accessible to students, as they represent the future.

Once we provide them with the appropriate tools, they will discover their own methods for learning and development. This is how the mission at MIDAS began.

“Being developing regions, this is where the next wave of engineers and creators will come from, and our aim is to provide them with the necessary resources,” he stated.

He mentioned that the company intends to engage students from various universities by providing them with resources to improve their education, thus closing the gap between academic learning and real-world application.

This marks the initial step today, as we discuss the donation of civil engineering software. Perhaps in the subsequent phase, we could also explore donating mechanical engineering software.

“So, in the field of building and structural engineering, the key product is MIDAS GenX, primarily used for designing buildings, bridges, and civil engineering projects,” he added.

Additionally, Prof. Michael Faborode stated that the NSC Chairman, from the Policy Think Tank Committee, mentioned the initiative seeks to develop graduates who will put an end to the period of building collapses and road failures in the nation.

In his statement, the Vice President for Professional Development at NSE, Prof. Aluyah Okodugha, mentioned that the program is designed to enable Nigerian engineers to stand out in comparison to their international counterparts.

He stated that we have consistently urged the government, private sector, and development collaborators to direct their focus and implement suitable measures in delivering advanced tools and infrastructure that improve engineering education and professional practices.

On behalf of the supporting institutions, Vice Chancellor of Confluence University, Prof Abdulrahman Salawu, expressed gratitude to the company and the NSE council for their initiative and committed to creating local software solutions that tackle regional issues.
