Telecel Ghana has reconfirmed its dedication to environmental responsibility and ethical business operations by organizing a hands-on sustainability and recycling workshop for staff to celebrate World Sustainability Day 2025.

Hosted by the Telecel Ghana Foundation and aligned with the organization’s Environmental Responsibility strategic focus, the workshop introduced staff to real-world methods of sustainable living, such as waste sorting, repurposing materials, and the significance of embracing circular economy approaches. Attendees also learned about essential sustainability concepts like Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, energy conservation, and the handling of plastic and electronic waste in company activities.

In collaboration with McKingtorch Africa, the session went beyond theoretical discussions and focused on practical implementation. Participants utilized leftover materials to design useful, environmentally friendly items, transforming recycled plastic waste into a specially made bench for the Telecel office and making potted plants for their workspaces. The activity highlighted how daily decisions and regular, small efforts can result in lasting positive environmental impacts.

Komla Buami, the External Affairs Director at Telecel Ghana, emphasized the significance of personal efforts in creating broader change. “Sustainability occurs when individuals decide to take action. Each small, ongoing step taken by our employees moves us nearer to the future we desire—a cleaner, greener, and more responsible world.”

Global Sustainability Day, celebrated every year on the final Wednesday of October, emphasizes the worldwide effort to safeguard the Earth and maintain its resources for coming generations. Telecel Ghana’s participation reflects its Purpose-Led Pillars, Environmental Stewardship and Sustainable Community, which shape the company’s ESG approach.

The workshop enhances Telecel Ghana’s ongoing environmental efforts throughout the year. Earlier this April, the organization celebrated Earth Day with an internal webinar that provided employees with useful information on sustainable living, including minimizing waste, saving energy, and embracing eco-friendly practices that support a cleaner environment.

In June, staff members planted 13,000 tree saplings (10,000 in Accra’s Chipa Forest Reserve and 3,000 in Kumasi’s South Formangso Reserve) in collaboration with the Forestry Commission as part of the national Green Ghana “Tree for Life” reforestation initiative. In addition to these efforts, Telecel Ghana is furthering energy management strategies, such as shifting critical facilities like data centers to solar energy.

By making these efforts, Telecel Ghana is enabling employees to take on roles as sustainability advocates, both at their workplace, at home, and within their communities. The company’s continuous programs align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Telecel Ghana continues to focus on incorporating eco-friendly practices throughout its activities, using collaborations, creativity, and staff volunteering to create positive environmental effects and bring about changes in the community.
