The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in Karachi has created a significant milestone by successfully carrying out an extremely intricate heart operation, ‘Total Arch Replacement using the Frozen Elephant Trunk Technique,’ on a 16-year-old individual from Khairpur. As per the NICVD representative, this pioneering procedure took more than 16 hours and represents a major advancement in Pakistan’s cardiac treatment field.
Owing to the highly complex nature of the case, an international cardiovascular specialist from Turkiye, Prof. Ugursay Kiziltepe, was specifically brought in to work alongside the NICVD surgical team. The operation was successfully carried out under his supervision, in collaboration with Cardiac Surgeon from NICVD Dr. Khuzaima Tariq, Prof. Asad Bilal Awan, Dr. Fahad (Cardiovascular Surgeon, Trauma Centre Karachi), and Prof. Amin M. Khuwaja, Consultant Anesthesiologist, NICVD. The young patient is currently recovering quickly and demonstrating positive post-operative development.
The operation, which typically costs approximately Rs. 6 million, was carried out without any charge, due to the generous assistance from the Government of Sindh. Prof. Ugursay Kiziltepe stated, ‘It was a privilege to collaborate with the talented and committed team at NICVD. This surgery, the first successful ‘Total Arch Replacement using the Frozen Elephant Trunk Technique’ conducted in Pakistan, demanded exceptional accuracy, teamwork, and perseverance. It marks a significant milestone in the country’s medical achievements and highlights NICVD’s capability to carry out complex and uncommon cardiovascular procedures that were once restricted to only a limited number of specialized centers worldwide.’
Cardiac Surgeon Dr. Khuzaima Tariq stated, “Being involved in Pakistan’s first successful Total Arch Replacement using the Modified Frozen Elephant Trunk Technique is a significant achievement for both NICVD and our nation. This operation is one of the most complex procedures in cardiovascular surgery, involving replacement of the aortic arch without utilizing DHCA while also implementing TEVAR. The success of this procedure highlights remarkable surgical skill, thorough preparation, and the excellent teamwork involved.”
Wrapping up the historic declaration, Prof. Tahir Saghir, Executive Director of NICVD, stated:
This extraordinary achievement is a source of pride for Pakistan’s medical field and a reflection of NICVD’s history of outstanding performance.
