BAFANA Bafana kept up their preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations with a strong 3-1 victory against Zambia at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday. The match showcased the team’s offensive strength and reliable defensive setup ahead of the 2025 Afcon in December.

Orlando Pirates’ forward Tshepang Moremi debuted in the national team, while midfielder Teboho Mokoena celebrated a significant achievement with his 50th appearance. The selected squad ensured Bafana began the game strongly, maintaining control of the ball and generating early opportunities through Moremi, Mokoena, Sipho Mbule, and Oswin Appollis.

The key moment occurred just before the break. Appollis, receiving a long pass from Sphephelo Sithole, placed a low shot into the far corner to put South Africa ahead. Appollis was replaced at halftime by Mohau Nkota, who hails from Kimberley, while Ronwen Williams and Mokoena were also taken off for Sipho Chaine and Thalente Mbatha.

Zambia made an early move in the second half, as Fashion Sankala moved in from a narrow angle, though Bafana managed to take back control. In the 61st minute, Nkota from Diamond City extended the lead with a curved shot following a smooth pass from Mbule. Just eight minutes later, Nkota delivered an exceptional precise corner for Sithole to head in Bafana’s third goal.

One goal slips through

Chipolopolo managed to score a goal late via Sabobo Banda, yet South Africa remained strong, securing their 10th win against Zambia in 25 encounters.

Bafana’s performance featured a disciplined approach to building play alongside an attacking style. The midfield, guided by Mbule, generated important chances and kept control in vital zones. Nkota’s two-goal impact and Sithole’s effective finishing highlighted the team’s capability to capitalize on opportunities.

The outcome of Saturday’s game marked a beneficial development for Bafana’s Afcon preparations, as the team acquired essential match tempo and self-assurance. Belgian manager Hugo Broos selected a mostly consistent starting XI, making only two adjustments compared to earlier games. Sphephelo Sithole, who came back from a year-long knee injury, secured his second start and seamlessly resumed his position in midfield alongside Mokoena.

Allowed to make changes, Broos managed his team well, keeping the players fresh and providing important playing time to many. Appollis, Nkota, Chaine, Mbatha, and other replacements made a significant impact in the offensive plays, showing the strength of the squad.

Bafana are now focusing on the upcoming Afcon games in Group B, where they will play against Angola, Egypt, and Zimbabwe. The match on Saturday served as a clear indication of the team’s preparedness and highlighted the significance of organized preparation before the continental competition.
