• Arsenal might face a financial burden of millions of shillings following an injury to their defender Gabriel Magalhaes.
  • Gabriel left the field with a limp during a friendly international game for Brazil against Senegal on November 15.
  • Riccardo Calafiori’s future remains unclear following his inability to represent Italy, due to what has been referred to as a ‘hip’ problem.

Arsenal might be entitled to some kind of reimbursement based on the duration their players remain injured.

The club will soon find out the outcome for Gabriel Magalhaes after the defender had to leave due to an injury while representing his country.

Gabriel featured in Brazil’s exhibition game against Senegal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday night. The Arsenal defender adapted well alongside Marquinhos until the 64th minute, when he fell.

He gripped his inner thigh while leaving the field, with Wesley Fraca stepping in for him. The 27-year-old will miss Brazil’s upcoming match against Tunisia as Carlo Ancelotti’s team intensifies its preparations for next year’s World Cup.

Regarding his club, they will have to wait for additional tests to determine the duration of his absence. The only positive outcome for Arsenal would be the compensation they might receive if the injury proves to be severe.

In 2012, FIFA introduced the Club Protection Programme, which provided compensation to clubs when their players were injured while representing their national teams.

Nevertheless, according to BBC Sport, a club can qualify for this payment only if the player is unavailable for 28 straight days following an injury caused by an ‘accident’.

The proposal mandates that the administrative committee cover the injured athlete’s salary amounting to £6.6m (approximately KSh 1.1 billion) until the player recovers.

Currently, Newcastle United are benefiting from the scheme since their new player Yoanne Wissa was injured while representing DR Congo before he had even played for his new team.

Gabriel’s stats this season

Arsenal is hoping their defender won’t be sidelined for an extended period. The Brazilian has been Arteta’s top choice, playing alongside William Saliba and contributing significantly on both ends of the field.

He has appeared 17 times in various tournaments, netting two goals and assisting in three more. They have conceded just five goals throughout the entire season.

“Bad? I’m not sure, he had an issue with his adductor, and the medical team will examine him tomorrow. We are truly sorry about this, and we’re really disappointed when players get injured. I hope they recover well and quickly,” said Ancelotti after the match.

Arsenal are also awaiting updates regarding Riccardo Calafiori’s injury, as he did not participate in training with Italy before their match against Moldova in the World Cup qualifiers.

The injuries occur during a challenging period for Arsenal’s schedule. They will host their rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, in a North London derby following the international break, after which they will play against Bayern Munich and Chelsea.
