• The main events in the Premier League panel have determined that it was incorrect to rule out Virgil Van Dijk’s goal during the match against Manchester City.
  • Van Dijk’s goal against Pep Guardiola’s team was mistakenly ruled out for offside because of Andrew Robertson’s location.
  • The reigning champions suffered a 3-0 defeat, increasing the distance between them and Arsenal.

The group responsible for evaluating officials’ calls in the Premier League has issued a new ruling regarding Virgil Van Dijk’s goal against Manchester City.

Van Dijk believed he had scored a goal for Liverpool in their match against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, but the assistant referee signaled an offside call.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) supported the call, stating that Andrew Robertson, who was in an offside position, influenced Gianluigi Donnarumma during the City goal.

The official Premier League statement said that the referee’s decision to rule out a goal for Liverpool due to offside was reviewed and confirmed by VAR – with Robertson found to be in an offside position and clearly interfering directly in front of the goalkeeper.

EPL committee decides on Van Dijk’s goal

Currently, a panel consisting of three ex-players or managers, along with a representative from the Premier League and another from PGMOL, has examined the call and determined that the decision to disqualify the goal was wrong, according to The Times.

Nevertheless, the panel concluded that it was the right choice to not reverse the on-field call since it was a matter of personal judgment.

Liverpool’s manager Arne Slot previously stated that it was incorrect for the referees to rule the goal out, yet he did not attribute the decisive 3-0 defeat to that decision.

“This can occur in football. It’s not that I clearly realized it was the wrong call, that this goal shouldn’t have been allowed, but I won’t claim that because of this we lost the match,” he stated through Liverpool’s website.

Two teams Michael Oliver cannot referee

In another report, Michael Oliver is prohibited from refereeing matches involving two Premier League teams.

Oliver was overseeing the VAR system in Manchester City’s 3-0 victory against Liverpool.

The seasoned official validated Virgil Van Dijk’s goal that was previously ruled out, a decision now being challenged by Liverpool.
