Colombia has retrieved the initial items from the 1708 sinking of the San José, a vessel thought to contain billions in gold, silver, and emeralds.

The Ministry of Cultures stated that a cannon, three coins, and a porcelain cup were recovered from a depth of almost 600 meters during a scientific expedition to examine the wreck, rather than to salvage treasure.

The ship, which was destroyed following an assault by an English navy, continues to be a point of legal arguments among Colombia, Spain, and American investors regarding who holds the rights to it.
