MINIYOTHABO Baloyi-Chiwenga has referred to her inclusion on the Miss Universe 2025 official judging panel as a significant accomplishment for Zimbabwe and the African continent.
Baloyi-Chiwenga, the spouse of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga and head of the Miss Universe Zimbabwe organization, is set to make history as the first African non-model to hold a judging position at the renowned international beauty contest, currently being held in Thailand.
She becomes part of an exclusive panel featuring Natalie Glebova, who won Miss Universe 2005 from Canada, and Andrea Meza, the 2020 Miss Universe titleholder from Mexico, as they will assess more than 80 participants from different countries.
The Miss Universe Zimbabwe, Lyshanda Moyas, is competing on behalf of Zimbabwe.
Speaking in Thailand before the pageant, which is scheduled for November 21, Baloyi-Chiwenga stated that her appointment highlights the increasing acknowledgment of African perspectives on international stages.
Being chosen as a judge is a privilege, not just for me or Zia Mbabwe, but for Africa as a whole, since it signifies that we are being acknowledged as a collective, and that Africa is being represented at the table where judgments and decisions are made. This holds great significance for us and for the girlchild,” she stated.
She mentioned that the fashion industry has undergone major changes, shifting away from old-fashioned stereotypes.
Over the past few years, I’ve noticed that the modeling industry is continuously improving, with individuals adopting a more professional approach.
“Long ago, there were many misinterpretations and misunderstandings regarding this industry, but things have changed now. I can say that the future looks promising, with many changes taking place, and we are pleased about it,” she added.
Baloyi-Chiwenga urged participants to showcase international understanding and a sense of social duty, noting that the pageant requires more than just physical attractiveness.
To succeed as a model, you need to represent the voice of the public, transcend personal interests, and act as a global citizen, addressing the problems and challenges that the world encounters.
So, for me to accept that you can represent the world, you need to be knowledgeable about the issues that the entire world is dealing with, no matter where you live.
