A KansasA boy suffered severe burns when his chain necklace shocked him after becoming caught between his phone charger and an extension cord by his bed.

Lorenzo Lopez, 8, nearly lost his life in an unusual incident on November 20, with medical professionals stating that his rapid action in removing the necklace was what saved him.

The young boy told KWCH From his hospital bed, he said, “I thought I was going to die,” and recounted the time he was shocked as “chaos.”

His mother, Kourtney Pendleton, stated that the evening began as usual, but after she put her son to sleep, he ‘turned over in his sleep.’

She mentioned that Lorenzo’s chain “happened to be in the space between the extension cord and the charger, which caused the shock,” and the sparks ignited his shirt.

Lorenzo described how the shock was followed by intense heat on his neck, which woke him up from bed as his shirt was still on fire, before he removed the necklace.

After his mother rushed him to the hospital, she expressed shock upon learning from doctors that her son had nearly died in the accident.

At the hospital,” the woman said, “she told him that if he hadn’t pulled that chain off, he would have been electrocuted to death,” she remembered. “So he basically saved his own life.

Pendleton posted pictures on social media depicting Lorenzo with significant burns on his chest, including a deep burn where the chain necklace scorched his neck.

She mentioned that her son was experiencing ‘extreme pain’ due to the burns, and added, ‘what he is enduring, I would never want anyone else to go through.’

In a GoFundMeconfigured to assist with covering his medical expenses, Pendleton mentioned that physicians anticipate Lorenzo will need to stay in the hospital for a minimum of two weeks to recuperate.

His rehabilitation involved requiring a skin graft operation, with Pendleton noting that doctors would harvest skin from his scalp, legs, and feet for the treatment.

“This is having a significant emotional impact on him, but he’s striving hard, just like the strong and courageous young boy he is — a real survivor,” she wrote.

Pendleton concluded the fundraising event with a cautionary message to other parents, stating, “this was a frightening, unusual accident that could have affected anyone.”

Parents — kindly, kindly avoid letting your children sleep with electronic devices or charging cables on their bed. It’s not worth taking the chance.

In a November 28 update regarding the fundraising effort, Pendleton mentioned that Lorenzo’s skin graft surgery was successful, although he is experiencing significant discomfort.

“He is overcoming each moment with great bravery. This has been a very tough and emotional path, yet he is persevering with a power that motivates us all,” she wrote.

Lorenzo shared with KWCH that he wishes his experience could help avoid a comparable unusual accident from occurring to other children.

“I simply wish to rescue a few lives,” he stated.
