TSHWANE, South Africa, (Live) — The World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ) 2025 commenced on Monday in Tshwane, gathering science communicators from across the globe for the inaugural WCSJ taking place on African territory.

The annual gathering is centered around the theme “Science journalism and social justice: reporting that fosters understanding and resilience.” The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation in South Africa stated that organizing the event highlights the nation’s dedication to enhancing science diplomacy, increasing recognition of African innovation, and promoting fair science communication.

Science offers great potential for humanity and for creating a fair and compassionate world,” stated François Davel, director of international cooperation at DSTI. “We need to use science to benefit society — especially for those who are most vulnerable and marginalized.

Delegates started the conference with excursions to the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for significant hominid fossil finds. Organizers stated that the visit highlighted the importance of scientific storytelling in enhancing public comprehension.

“In this birthplace of human history, science and analysis are brought to life through story-telling grounded in evidence,” remarked Lynne Smit, senior editor at Nature Africa and a member of the local organizing committee.

Conference Director Engela Duvenage stated that the gathering seeks to provide journalists with resources to convey science “in an accessible, ethical, and effective manner” while encouraging community resilience.

The WCSJ takes place only two days after South Africa organized the yearly Science Forum.
