Mzuzu University (MZUNI) was declared the top victor at the Tertiary Students Sports Association of Malawi (TESSAM) Weekend Sports Festival, which took place on Saturday and Sunday at the University of Malawi in Zomba. This event aimed to identify athletes for the 2026 CUCSA Games in Botswana.

MZUNI surpassed its competitors by winning in men’s and women’s football, netball, and volleyball, establishing itself as the leading institution in the competition.

Bunda College secured victories in both the men’s and women’s basketball competitions, the University of Malawi won in chess, and Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) topped in athletics.

The event, funded by the National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Plc with a K17 million contribution, gathered various universities and colleges to create a competitive platform for identifying top talent, with the goal of forming the next national university team, TESSAM Malawi.

Zomba NBM Plc Service Centre Manager, Tawina Malata, said she is proud of the Bank’s contribution to aiding Malawi’s young athletes.

“We are firmly convinced that the future of our nation lies with the youth, and backing this event helps us develop their abilities and possibilities. We are happy that a number of exceptional players have been chosen to represent Malawi. As National Bank, we are proud to collaborate with organizations in fostering discipline, drive, and national progress through sports,” stated Malata.

TESSAM Malawi Vice President, Geoffrey Biya, stated that the tournament successfully achieved its main goal of identifying athletes for the CUCSA Games and commended NBM Plc for filling the resource gap that universities frequently encounter.

“The games were specifically held to spot players who will represent Malawi in the coming year. The National Bank’s backing enabled all these universities to unite and compete on this level. We appreciate their dedication to youth development and sporting excellence,” said Biya.

The Sports Director of MZUNI, Thomas Movetie, whose university achieved the best overall results, referred to the win as a source of pride for the institution.

“We are very proud of the accomplishments of our athletes. Their dedication has yielded results, demonstrating the resilience and perseverance of the MZUNI community. We also thank National Bank Plc for their involvement in supporting university sports and for facilitating opportunities for young athletes throughout the nation,” stated Movetie.

The event effectively achieved its goal, with 30 netball athletes, 12 chess players, 24 volleyball players, 24 male basketball players, 34 female basketball players, 28 female football players, and 34 athletic competitors being considered for potential selection into the national university team.

Chosen athletes will start getting ready for Botswana, with their initial training session in January, then monthly gatherings until the final CUCSA squad is decided.

Additional organizations involved in the TESSAM sports festival were Kamuzu College of Health Sciences, Natural Resources College (NRC), University of Livingstonia, DMI St John the Baptist University, MUBAS, and Bunda Campus of LUANAR.
