TOKYO — In reaction to a protest letter from The Mainichi Newspapers Co., the U.S.-based generative AI firm Perplexity AI Inc. expressed that it is “confused and sorry that issues have been brought up.”

Perplexity AI responded on December 2 in Japan time to a letter from The Mainichi Newspapers, which had been sent the day before and accused the company of utilizing articles without authorization in its generative AI search service.

The Mainichi Newspapers claims that showcasing responses derived from articles acquired without authorization is a violation of copyright. The Mainichi Newspapers has requested Perplexity AI to stop the unauthorized utilization of its material immediately. It is also asking for the removal of data that Perplexity AI has previously copied, along with compensation, arguing that permitting “free-riding” on articles might damage the revenue model of news outlets, eventually endangering the basis of democracy.

Perplexity AI stated that it will “verify the facts and deliver a comprehensive response in good faith.” The company also mentioned that millions of queries are submitted daily from Japan, asserting that it is effectively satisfying the intellectual curiosity of Japanese users and their right to accurately comprehend information.
