The Taliban government in Afghanistan executed a man publicly on Tuesday. He had been found guilty of murdering 13 people from one family, including multiple children, earlier this year.

Thousands of individuals gathered at a sports stadium in the eastern city of Khost for the execution, an event the Supreme Court noted as the eleventh since the Taliban took control in 2021 following the disorganized departure of US and NATO troops.

The execution was authorized following a death sentence imposed by a court, an appellate court, and the Supreme Court, and subsequently approved by Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada.

A man was killed by a family member of the people he was convicted for killing, as reported by Khost police.

He was found guilty together with others for breaking into a family residence and fatally shooting an extended family, comprising nine children and their mother.

The Supreme Court stated that the families of the victims were given the choice of reconciliation, which could have saved the man’s life, but they opted for the death penalty instead.

Prior to the execution, Richard Bennett, the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, had urged its suspension.

“Public executions are inhumane, constitute a cruel and unusual form of punishment, and violate international law,” he stated in a message posted on X early Tuesday.

The United Nations has sharply condemned the Taliban for conducting public executions, floggings, and stonings since taking control and has called on its leaders to cease these actions.

In October, Bennett stated that the application of the death penalty in Afghanistan was “particularly concerning” due to the Taliban-run judicial system’s “complete absence of independence or fair procedures.”

The Taliban leadership in Afghanistan has enforced a strict version of Sharia law, leading to the resumption of public executions, along with restrictions preventing Afghan women and girls from attending secondary schools, universities, and engaging in most types of work.
