Eleven individuals believed to be terrorists were reportedly killed during an operation that took place from Saturday night through Sunday in Gatawa, within the Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
A high-ranking military official revealed this, but requested to remain unnamed.
The senior officer stated, “troops were deployed following a distress call from personnel in the region, after an overnight assault on the Gatawa community that resulted in five vigilante members being killed and one seriously injured.”
The support team, headed by a Nigerian Army Major, confronted the attackers and fought them intensely, defeating them and disabling 11.
He mentioned that the operation was an immediate reaction to the attack that occurred on Saturday, when locals stated that armed individuals entered the neighborhood around 1:30 a.m., firing randomly.
Local reports stated that members of the vigilante group attempted to drive back the aggressors but lost four individuals at the scene, with two others suffering gunshot wounds. One of the wounded later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
Residents also revealed that six individuals, comprising two married women, two teenage girls, and two young boys, were taken during the attack, while an unknown quantity of livestock was stolen.
The assailants are said to have escaped prior to the arrival of security personnel.
Nevertheless, a military source verified that forces followed the terrorists into the dense vegetation and confronted them, leading to the death of eleven suspects early Monday morning.
