Residents in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State celebrated on Monday following the Nigerian Army’s successful prevention of an attack on their communities, resulting in the death of at least 13 suspected criminals during a joint operation.

Soldiers stationed in Kurawa close to Kwanan Kimbo fought against the attackers in a intense firefight that continued for many hours, pushing the aggressors back.

Troops eventually chased the escaping robbers to their refuge beyond a river, where more losses were noted.

A source from the community informed our reporter that nine corpses were retrieved from the area, while four more were discovered in the nearby vegetation.

Various arms, such as AK-47 rifles and bullets, were also found and transported to the military installation in Kurawa.

Military officials verified the operation, carried out under Operation Fansan Yamma, characterizing it as “intense” while mentioning that the army reported no losses.

“A strong attempt was made by the soldiers. The militants experienced significant casualties,” a source mentioned.

The operation took place only a few days after soldiers and local volunteers successfully stopped another assault on the Gatawa community on Friday, boosting public trust in the renewed security initiatives.

In Kurawa, Tarah, Karawa, and surrounding communities, people were observed rejoicing over the military’s achievements. They called on the armed forces to maintain the pace in order to stop the ongoing assaults that have affected Sabon Birni LGA.

Confirming the development, Alhaji Aminu Boza, the representative of Sabon Birni in the Sokoto State House of Assembly, stated that at least nine corpses of the attackers were observed, with ongoing search operations.

The Sokoto State Administration also commended the soldiers for their quick response. In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the Governor regarding Security Issues, Col. Ahmed Usman (retired), the government mentioned that the armed forces prevented what might have turned into a devastating attack on merchants traveling from Tarah to the Sabon Birni weekly market.

“The dedication and bravery shown by our armed forces highlight their vow to safeguard people and assets,” Usman stated.

He mentioned that Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s government would keep providing support to security agencies and urged residents to stay alert and provide up-to-date information.

“Anyone who helps or supports illegal actions will encounter the full force of the law,” he cautioned.

Sabon Birni LGA has been among the most affected regions in Sokoto, enduring multiple attacks in recent months, especially in areas like Gatawa and nearby communities. Locals express their hope that the recent military victory could signal a change in the fight to bring stability back to the area.
