Under the Punjab Chief Minister’s Initiative Programme, a detailed two-year development master plan has been introduced to convert the Lahore Arts Council (Alhamra) into a contemporary, advanced cultural organization. A senior-level coordination meeting was conducted on Monday to assess the project’s progress and ensure seamless execution of the plan, which is part of the Annual Development Programme (ADP) aimed at enhancing Alhamra’s infrastructure and elevating its literary, cultural, and artistic significance in alignment with global standards. During the meeting, the Executive Engineer (XEN) CandW provided an in-depth technical update to facilitate effective collaboration between the contractor, CandW personnel, and project consultants. Renowned architect and design advisor Nayyar Ali Dada informed Executive Director Alhamra Muhammad Nawaz Gondal about the architectural and design aspects of the project, while internationally recognized artist Imran Qureshi has been involved in contributing to the aesthetic and artistic components of the renovation. Executive Director Muhammad Nawaz Gondal mentioned that the project will be carried out in three stages, focusing on the restoration, enhancement, and modernization of Alhamra’s facilities to offer a better experience for artists and visitors.
He mentioned that Phase I would involve the restoration of the Alhamra Art Gallery, Puppet Hall, and Alhamra Art Museum within the Cultural Complex.
In Phase II, Alhamra Hall 1, Hall 3, and both auditoriums at the Cultural Complex will be addressed, whereas Phase III will focus on the renovation of Alhamra Hall 2 and other related areas, he mentioned.
The ED mentioned that the initiative showcased the vision of Punjab’s Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and the Information and Culture Minister in advancing arts and culture while safeguarding Punjab’s cultural heritage. He conveyed his belief that the project would enhance Alhamra’s position as a prominent cultural organization.
Deputy Director Admin Syed Umair Hassan, Deputy Director Library and Archive Muhammad Arif, and Deputy Director Public Relations Subha Sadiq were also in attendance at the meeting.
