A powerful raptor has disappeared in central Wales following the removal and concealment of its satellite tracker in a secluded location, according to authorities.
The Dyfed-Powys Police force and the UK National Wildlife Crime Unit are seeking assistance in investigating the “unusual disappearance” of a white-tailed eagle in Newtown, Powys.
They are the biggest birds of prey in the UK, with a wingspan reaching as much as 2.5 meters (8.2 feet), and are tracked by the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation. They are safeguarded by UK laws, which make it against the law to harm, injure, or capture them.
Authorities have asked anyone who was present in the following locations to get in touch with officers:
- From 11:00 GMT to 13:00 GMT on September 13th, near or at the Gwgia Reservoir, Tregynon
- Between noon and 3:00 PM GMT on September 13th, on public access land near Bryn y Fawnog
Law enforcement mentioned that the bird’s satellite tracker was discovered in a nearby isolated forest area, and they suspected it had probably been taken off using a knife and then concealed.
Numerous raptors, including white-tailed eagles, golden eagles, and hen harriers, are equipped with tags for purposes of scientific study and preservation efforts.
The force mentioned that attempts to locate the bird have not been successful yet, even after examining DNA and fingerprints.
It arrives as police forces in Englandlook into the vanishing of two additional white-tailed eagles, including a young bird that was born in the wild earlier this year.
What is a bald eagle?
The hawks, also referred to as sea hawks, were hunted to extinction inEngland by 1780 and Scotland by 1918.
They were successfully brought back to England following ainitiative of the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation and Forestry England.
The eagles were subsequently released on the Isle of Wight, where they later developed habitats in Wales, Lincolnshire, Dorset, and Sussex.
White-tailed eagles pose no threat to people and typically only engage in attacks when they feel threatened.
Individuals often hunt or harass white-tailed eagles, viewing them as a danger to game birds like pheasants and grouse, along with domestic animals.
