The Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA) has shown its commitment to promoting Nigeria’s circular economy by successfully concluding the 2025 Christmas Buyback Initiative in Shomolu Local Government.
The gathering saw robust community involvement, notable retrieval of used packaging materials, and increased public understanding of proper waste disposal.
The repurchase event gathered over 240 residents, such as youth organizations, women, craftsmen, and local entrepreneurs. Dignitaries and organizational partners were also in attendance, including the Special Advisor to the Governor regarding Climate Change and Circular Economy, Mrs Titilayo Oshodi, officials from the Federal Ministry of Environment, NESREA, LAWMA, the Department of Environment, Shomolu Local Government and Community Development Council, FBRA member, businesses, and volunteers.
After the official welcome and statements from stakeholders, FBRA guided participants on a one-hour environmental awareness walk, involving local community members and educating households about the economic and environmental benefits of recycling.
At the end of the buyback session, FBRA gathered a notable 1.8 metric tons of recyclable waste, such as PET bottles, glass bottles, aluminum cans, used beverage cartons, and additional post-consumer packaging items.
The materials will go through Trashusers, FBRA’s collection partner for this initiative, ensuring they are redirected into useful applications within the circular economy instead of being discarded in landfills or drainage systems.
The Shomolu Christmas Buyback reflects FBRA’s dedication to assisting member businesses in meeting their Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) obligations, as noted by the Executive Director, Agharese Lucia Onaghise.
By maintaining consistent local involvement and projects led by the community, FBRA remains committed to promoting proper waste disposal methods and enhancing the country’s recycling infrastructure.
FBRA thanked Shomolu Local Government, community leaders, collaborators, and residents for their support and eagerness, reaffirming its dedication to increasing environmental influence in additional communities throughout Lagos and further afield.
For the Alliance, the Shomolu Christmas Buyback is more than just an end-of-year event—it serves as a strong example of leadership, collaboration, and creativity in advancing Nigeria’s circular economy.
