Cambodia has kept launching powerful weapons towards Thai border regions, leading Thailand to doubt Cambodia’s genuine intentions before upcoming ceasefire talks.
Rear Admiral Surasant Kongsiri, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, stated on Wednesday afternoon that Cambodian troops opened fire on Thai military personnel in Ban Nong Chan village, located in Sa Kaeo province, at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. One Thai soldier was killed and four others were injured. The number of Thai military personnel who have died in border conflicts with Cambodia has now reached 23.
As stated by the spokesperson, at 5pm on Tuesday, Cambodia launched rockets toward the Pha Mo E Dang region within Khao Phra Wihan National Park in Si Sa Ket province, causing damage to the park’s administrative office.
At 10:15 am on Wednesday, Cambodia launched over 80 rockets towards Ban Klong Pang village in the Ta Phraya district of Sa Kaeo, following the withdrawal of its forces from the region.
‘Cambodia keeps launching attacks using heavy weapons. If Cambodia was truly committed, these assaults would cease. Despite upcoming talks, the attacks persist. Thailand must respond in self-defense following international guidelines,’ Rear Adm Surasant stated. He was talking about the truce discussions led by the Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee set to start at 4pm on Wednesday in Chanthaburi province.
Captain Richa Suksuwanon, deputy spokesperson for the Thai military, stated that Thai forces have reestablished control over the villages of Ban Klong Pang and Ban Nong Ya Kaew in Sa Kaeo province, which had been previously occupied by Cambodian troops. Thai troops had not yet completely recaptured Ban Nong Chan village.
He mentioned that intense fighting also persisted in the Phu Makua and Huai Ta Maria regions of Si Sa Ket province.
Near the border, Thai forces maintained control over additional combat zones and repeatedly discovered PMN-2 anti-personnel mines and anti-tank mines that had been altered to serve as highly effective anti-personnel weapons in regions once controlled by Cambodian troops.
“Anti-personnel mines have been consistently deployed along the border since July. This serves as proof of breaches of the Ottawa Convention,” said Col Richa.
Air Marshal Jackkrit Thammavichai, the spokesperson for the Royal Thai Air Force, stated that Cambodia has kept attacking not only military installations but also civilian regions in Thailand.
“Peace arises from genuine intentions. Cambodia has not shown any sincerity towards a ceasefire,” he stated.
He mentioned that air strikes were conducted on Cambodian military storage facilities on Wednesday morning, aiming to diminish Cambodia’s combat abilities and safeguard Thai military personnel and residents.
