The Nigerian Armed Forces have stated that the recent air strikes in the North West highlight the Federal Government’s strong determination to fight terrorism, conducted in partnership with the United States.

The head of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, revealed this in a statement released on Friday in Abuja, noting that the operation was based on reliable intelligence and sought to reduce the terrorists’ operational effectiveness while limiting unintended harm.

He stated that the strikes were carried out with the consent of relevant officials as part of ongoing initiatives to eliminate terrorists and other unlawful individuals endangering the nation’s security.

“The Nigerian Armed Forces, along with the United States of America, has carried out targeted attacks on recognized foreign ISIS-associated groups in certain areas of North West Nigeria,” Uba stated.

He stated, “The attacks were based on reliable information and meticulous operational preparation designed to weaken the terrorists’ abilities while reducing unintended harm.”

Uba stated that the operation highlighted the determination of the Federal Government, in collaboration with key international allies, to tackle transnational terrorism and stop foreign fighters from setting up or growing their presence in Nigeria.

“This move clearly highlights the strong determination of the Nigerian Federal Government, working with key international allies, to tackle cross-border terrorism and stop foreign militants from establishing a presence in our country,” he stated.

A military representative emphasized the Armed Forces’ dedication to safeguarding people and assets throughout the nation.

“The Nigerian Armed Forces is fully dedicated to safeguarding the lives and assets of citizens and will keep backing collaborative, inter-agency, and global initiatives focused on bringing long-term peace and stability to the nation,” Uba stated.

On Friday earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Nigeria continues to participate in organized security and intelligence collaboration with global partners, such as the United States, in combating terrorism and extreme violence.

In a statement released by the ministry’s representative, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the ministry mentioned that the partnership includes exchanging information, strategic cooperation, and various types of assistance consistent with international law, mutual respect for independence, and common security obligations.

The ministry emphasized that Nigeria’s counter-terrorism initiatives are driven by the goal of protecting civilian lives, preserving national unity, and respecting the rights of every citizen, regardless of religion or ethnicity. It also noted that terrorist attacks targeting any religious or ethnic group are a violation of Nigeria’s values and global peace.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs came after remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated on Thursday that American forces had conducted lethal attacks on Islamic State militants in northwestern Nigeria.

In a different social media update, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth mentioned that Washington worked together with the Nigerian government, thanking Nigeria for its assistance during the operation.

The air strikes occurred one day following an explosion at a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, that resulted in five fatalities and numerous injuries, with officials believing it was a suicide attack, underscoring persistent security issues in certain regions of the nation.
