The Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu, has urged the soldiers of the 248 Battalion stationed at Illela Barracks in Sokoto State to be proud of their position as trailblazers of the newly formed unit, and has pledged that their well-being will always be a key concern for the Nigerian Army.
Speaking to officers and soldiers on Saturday, during a visit to the battalion, Lt Gen Shuaibu referred to the position as a symbol of prestige, encouraging the personnel—especially the younger soldiers—to view the assignment as a chance to create a legacy they will be proud of in the years ahead.
You are the trailblazers of this group, and I expect you to carry that symbol of pride.
“Rome was not constructed in a single day. Slowly, we will build this barracks, and when you look back in years to come, you will be proud to claim you were among those who laid the groundwork,” said the Army Chief.
The Chief of Army Staff revealed that the Army Command had given approval to multiple urgent infrastructure initiatives aimed at enhancing the living and working environments within the barracks.
These involve the building of more housing, the creation of the parade area, and the development of the road connecting to the barracks.
“I have heard what your Commanding Officer has said about the difficulties you are encountering. We have given approval for the building of more dormitory rooms, your drill field, and the road leading to these barracks,” he stated, reassuring the soldiers that steps were being taken to ensure their comfort during their stay.
Shuaibu also spoke to junior officers, especially lieutenants, whom he referred to as the foundation of the unit’s operational success.
He assigned them the responsibility of maintaining strict and ongoing training for the troops, emphasizing that leading by example was essential for achieving mission objectives.
“In our era, we referred to you as ‘fire eaters.’ You are tasked with training these soldiers around the clock. You will guide them into combat, and the way you act now will influence how your men respond,” he stated.
The head of the Army once again emphasized to officers and troops the duties associated with the presidential appointment, highlighting that discipline, expertise, and effective leadership were crucial for maintaining combat preparedness.
Speaking directly to the soldiers, Shuaibu encouraged them to heed their officers’ instructions and let themselves be led, emphasizing that Nigeria’s security largely relies on the strength, discipline, and dedication of its young military members.
“Each country relies on its youth. Being young gives you the power to accomplish more. Although we will strive to offer you what you require, you need to keep fulfilling your duties as soldiers,” he stated.
The visit concluded with an interactive session, where the COAS invited queries from the soldiers, supported by senior staff officers from Army Headquarters.
