Members of the 13th Brigade of the Nigerian Army, based at Forward Operating Base Ikang, have managed to free eight individuals who had been taken captive near the Ikang–Cameroon water routes.
As stated in a message shared by the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, Major Yemi Sokoya on the Nigerian Army’s X account on Tuesday, the operation was initiated based on reliable information provided by local residents suggesting that rebels had seized a commercial vessel and taken six adults and two children.
Quickly, the soldiers moved out to chase the offenders, cut off potential escape paths, and took control of the waterways.
Due to the quick reaction, the militants left the victims at Ini-Abasi Fishing Port and escaped into surrounding waterways and the open ocean.
“The civilians were safely retrieved, recorded, and subsequently set free, with no injuries mentioned throughout the mission,” the statement said.
The leader of the 13th Brigade, Brigadier General PO Alimikhena, commended the soldiers’ expertise and swift response.
He also expressed gratitude to local community members for their prompt information, which was crucial for the successful rescue, and assured the public that the Brigade would maintain active patrols to stop future criminal acts.
He called on members of the public to keep providing security forces with prompt and reliable information to assist in ensuring safety in the region.
