Hollywood actor and director Angelina Jolie paid an unexpected visit to the Rafah crossing point in the Gaza Strip.

As reported by AFP and other sources on the 2nd, Jolie toured the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing point that day and met with Red Crescent Society representatives and drivers delivering humanitarian aid.

Jolie was said to have gone to the location to assess the situation of Palestinian injured people from Gaza who were moved to Egypt and to examine the progress of aid shipments. Jolie serves as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador and previously held the role of UNHCR special envoy.

CNN stated, “Jolie went to the Rafah border checkpoint while aid organizations in Gaza encounter the risk of being blocked by Israel.”

Israel introduced new rules the previous day that limited access to Gaza and the West Bank for numerous humanitarian organizations. Under these rules, staff members of aid groups are required to provide personal details. Not following this requirement will lead to their certifications being revoked starting from January 1 of this year, with a mandate to stop operations within 60 days. It has been reported that 37 organizations, such as Oxfam, the International Rescue Committee (IRC), ActionAid, Doctors Without Borders (MSF), and the Norwegian Refugee Council, did not adhere to the regulations.

In reply, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar called on Israel that day to guarantee the ongoing functioning of the UN and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Gaza and the West Bank. The foreign ministers of these eight Arab and Islamic nations voiced worry about the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza in a joint statement released that day.

A representative from Jolie’s team said, “The visit was conducted for humanitarian reasons.” Jolie was later said to have met with Palestinian and Sudanese refugee families in Egypt.

In a statement, Jolie mentioned, “I talked to humanitarian groups striving to overcome the challenges and obstacles in providing essential aid to Gaza,” and she added, “I visited a big storage facility containing rejected goods, mostly medical equipment.”

He said, “The requirements are evident. The truce needs to be upheld, and access should be rapidly increased to allow aid, fuel, and vital medical supplies to be transported quickly and reliably in the necessary amounts, securely and without interruption.”
