Super EaglesForward Cyriel Dessers is no longer participating in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations due to a thigh injury and has returned to his club, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The forward from the Rangers team’s involvement in the competition concluded following an injury he suffered during Nigeria’s Group C matches in Morocco.
The media team of the Super Eagles announced Dessers’ exit on Friday, noting that a thigh injury had compelled him to leave the team before Nigeria’s round of 16 match against Mozambique on Monday.
“A leg injury has kept Cyriel Dessers out of the team. He has now gone back to his club,” the statement said.
Dessers had been dealing with the injury for several days and was one of three players who skipped the team’s New Year’s Day training session on Thursday, along with Ryan Alebiosu and Victor Osimhen.
A 30-year-old striker had an examination to assess the severity of his thigh injury, which has now been diagnosed as significant enough to conclude his participation in the AFCON tournament.
In the meantime, Ryan Alebiosu, the full-back for the Super Eagles, has received a major positive development following confirmation that his injury is less severe than initially thought.
The Blackburn Rovers defender, who earned his Super Eagles debut in Nigeria’s last Group C game against Uganda, sustained a severe wound on his right leg during Tuesday night’s 3-1 win.
The event quickly sparked worries that the 24-year-old might be excluded for the rest of the competition, with initial reports indicating he could be sidelined for as long as a month.
Nevertheless, these concerns have been eased. Alebiosu is anticipated to be out for just a few weeks and will stay with the Nigerian team during their participation in AFCON 2025.
The full-back missed Friday evening’s training session but attended the team’s practice as his recovery from the leg injury continues.
Importantly, Alebiosu will not return to his team and is included in Eric Chelle’s strategy as the Super Eagles get ready for the elimination stage.
Born in England to Nigerian parents, Alebiosu was called up to the Super Eagles team just before the AFCON due to injuries to Ola Aina and Benjamin Fredrick.
The former Arsenal trainee made his debut against Uganda as the Super Eagles concluded a flawless group-stage performance. Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen was among several who praised Alebiosu after his performance against the Ugandans.
Blackburn Rovers’ manager Valerien Ismael has offered comfort, stating that the injury is not serious.
“Ryan Alebiosu completed 90 minutes with Nigeria without any issues. He has a small cut, but it’s not serious for us,” Ismael stated.
Nigeria, having secured a perfect 100% record in Group C, will now compete against Mozambique’s Mambas in the round of 16 in Fès on Monday.
