The United States detained and deported Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro along with his wife during an action in Venezuela on the 3rd, as foreign media sources such as Reuters indicated that the Venezuelan Supreme Court instructed Vice President Delcy Rodríguez to take on the position of interim president to exercise presidential powers.

The Venezuelan Supreme Court declared that Vice President Rodríguez “must assume and carry out all the powers and responsibilities of the presidency on an interim basis to guarantee the continuity of governance and the full protection of the nation.” According to the Venezuelan Constitution, if the president is temporarily or permanently unable to fulfill their duties, the vice president should step in. Nevertheless, the court did not state that President Maduro, who was detained by the U.S., is permanently incapable of performing his duties.

The court stated it would examine the case “to establish the legal structure necessary for maintaining the state and administration, as well as safeguarding sovereignty, considering the president’s involuntary absence (by the U.S.).”

Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned during a press briefing that the United States would “manage the country temporarily” to bring stability to Venezuela until a peaceful change of leadership takes place. In a later media interview, he stated that U.S. troops would not be deployed in Venezuela provided that Venezuelan officials comply with U.S. expectations. When questioned by the New York Post in an exclusive conversation about whether U.S. forces would help manage Venezuela, he responded, “No,” and added, “If the vice president of Maduro does what we want, there will be no need for us to do so.” President Trump mentioned, “We have spoken with him (the Venezuelan vice president) several times, and he understands the situation.”

However, Vice President Rodríguez mentioned during an emergency cabinet meeting, “There is only one president in Venezuela, Maduro,” adding, “President Maduro is our leader and commander-in-chief.”
