Addis Ababa, January 6, 2026 (ENA)—Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates enhanced their enduring collaboration during top-level discussions held today, coinciding with the working visit of Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of State.

The conversations underscored the level of mutual respect and collaboration between the two countries, with both parties stressing their dedication to protecting each other’s peace, safety, territorial sovereignty, and economic concerns.

As stated in the joint Ministerial Statement posted on Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ social media platform, the discussions centered on promoting regional stability and tackling immediate humanitarian concerns.

The two nations examined progress in regional peace and security and reaffirmed their dedication to fostering stability and enduring peace.

Both the UAE and Ethiopia withdrew from the High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the People of Sudan, jointly organized with IGAD and the African Union in February 2025, which aimed to gather backing for Sudan’s humanitarian requirements.

Ethiopia and the UAE criticized the attacks on civilians in Sudan and urged the conflicting sides to guarantee the safety of civilians and humanitarian workers.

They emphasized that the main duty to conclude the conflict lies with the involved parties and reiterated the importance of a humanitarian ceasefire that paves the way for a lasting truce, swift and unrestricted humanitarian aid, and an inclusive process toward a self-governing civilian-led administration.

Key issues on a global scale were also addressed.

The UAE has acknowledged Ethiopia’s efforts in preparing for COP32 and has shown willingness to work together to continue the achievements of COP28 and the UAE Consensus, a significant agreement involving 198 Parties. Both countries seek to present a strong climate plan at the upcoming conference.

The discussions also emphasized the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference, jointly organized by the UAE and Senegal, set to occur in the UAE later this year.

Both parties highlighted the significance of sustainable water solutions and technological advancements, pointing out potential areas for collaboration in promoting clean water and sanitation under SDG6.

Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates ended the meeting by reiterating their common dedication to regional peace, humanitarian safeguarding, and the ongoing enhancement of their strategic alliance.
