HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has made its initial breakthrough in the U.S. Navy’s fleet maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) sector. The company reported on the 7th that it finished and handed over maintenance services for the U.S. Navy ship USS Alan Shepard, which it initially won in August of the previous year. In December of last year, it also obtained a contract to service the second ship, the Cesar Chavez.
Previously, in August of last year, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries entered into an agreement to service the U.S. Navy’s 41,000-ton military support vessel USNS Alan Shepard. This was the company’s first MRO contract with the U.S. Navy. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries started the maintenance process at a dock close to its medium-sized ship division in Ulsan in September of last year. Initially, the project involved approximately 60 tasks, but additional work such as propeller cleaning, tank maintenance, and equipment checks raised the total to more than 100 items. Nevertheless, the company’s quick response ensured the project was finished on time.
A representative from the U.S. Navy mentioned, “We are very pleased to have the Alan Shepard returned to us in great condition and on time.” Joo Won-ho, head of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, remarked, “We have successfully finished our first U.S. Navy ship maintenance project using our superior technology and experience. Since setting up our fleet and mid-sized ship business division, we will keep improving our skills and efficiency to take the lead in the U.S. Navy maintenance industry.”
This achievement led to a second agreement. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will start maintenance on the Cesar Chavez on the 19th of this month, after securing the contract at the end of last year. The ship, launched in 2012, is 210 meters long and 32 meters wide. It will receive detailed maintenance on more than 100 components, such as the hull, structures, propulsion, electrical, and auxiliary systems, and is expected to be handed over to the U.S. Navy in March.
