Cambodia needs to promptly clarify the violation of the ceasefire along the border in Ubon Ratchathani on Tuesday morning, when a Thai soldier was injured by a Cambodian mortar shell, said Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

Cambodia first regarded the event as an “accident,” subsequently stating that an explosion at a garbage pile had harmed two Cambodian soldiers who were on duty, but it did not refer to the injured Thai soldier.

Mr. Anutin informed journalists at Government House that his administration was consistently receiving updates on the border conditions, and the relevant authorities were following the procedures specified in the joint statement both nations had approved last month,

At 7:25 am on Tuesday, the 2nd Army Region stated that Cambodian troops launched mortar shells into Thai land close to Hill 469 in the Chong Bok region of Ubon Ratchathani. A Thai soldier, Sgt Maj 1st Class Prachya Pilachai, sustained an arm injury from shrapnel.

The Thai military and security forces have filed a complaint with Cambodia, requesting an explanation for the event, which will influence Thailand’s subsequent actions, according to Mr. Anutin.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has written to its Cambodian counterpart, asking for clarification and an official diplomatic explanation regarding the ceasefire breach that occurred on Tuesday morning.

No guidelines for engagement had been provided to Thai forces, but plans were already set up, and any counteractions would be determined as needed, the prime minister stated.

This is merely a preliminary statement, and there will be processes that demonstrate Thailand is functioning within the established framework,” he stated. “If required, Thailand will take action. Information will be finalized to achieve a tangible result, and the military is performing correctly.

Mr. Anutin stated that, as per the military report, the Cambodian party asserted it was an accident. It remains to be seen how Cambodia will take responsibility for the ‘accident,’ Mr. Anutin mentioned.

Local groups in the vicinity were in contact with military forces, who had been directed to observe and support the inhabitants. An evacuation was not necessary at this time, he mentioned.

A spokesperson from Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, Lt Gen Maly Socheata, stated in a later release that an explosion took place in a garbage pile located in the Mum Bei area of Preah Vihear province [near Ubon Ratchathani], resulting in two Cambodian soldiers on duty at the location being injured. Both individuals were undergoing medical care.

Both nations’ officials had met, shared details, and worked together to tackle the matter, said Lt Gen Maly.

The Cambodian government stated that the nation is dedicated to settling the dispute through peaceful means in line with international law.

“The Cambodian government reaffirms its strong and genuine dedication to uphold and carry out the provisions of the peace agreements between Cambodia and Thailand, signed in July and October last year, with the final one taking place on December 27,” the statement from Cambodia noted.

The prime minister’s press conference was joined by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, the Defence Minister, Gen Natthaphon Narkpanit, and the secretary-general of the National Security Council, Chatchai Bangchuad.
