A person was killed and another injured in an Israeli drone attack that focused on a vehicle in southern Lebanon on Wednesday, shortly after a committee meeting overseeing a 12-month truce.
Israel has increased its attacks on southern and eastern Lebanon in recent days, claiming it has targeted locations associated with the Iran-backed Lebanese militant organization as well as its Palestinian ally Hamas.
The Israeli defense forces announced in a statement that they targeted a Hezbollah agent in Jwayya.
Although a ceasefire was reached in November 2024 aimed at ending over a year of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, the Israeli military has continued to conduct regular attacks in Lebanon, typically claiming they are targeting locations and members of the militant organization, and occasionally Hamas.
In a statement released on Tuesday, President Joseph Aoun stated, “Israel’s ongoing attacks are intended to undermine all local, regional, and international efforts aimed at halting the current Israeli escalation, even though Lebanon has demonstrated a response to these initiatives at multiple levels.”
The U.N. Deputy Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, was recently in Lebanon, where he met with Aoun and Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri.
On Thursday, Lebanon’s government will meet to review the military’s efforts in neutralizing Hezbollah, a initiative introduced under significant U.S. influence and in response to concerns about increased Israeli attacks.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar stated on Sunday that the efforts to disarm are not adequate.
