Damascus, January 6, (dpa/GNA) – Violent confrontations erupted on Tuesday in the northern city of Aleppo between Kurdish fighters and government troops, with each side accusing the other of being responsible for the conflict.
The conflict included the Kurdish Internal Security Forces (Asayish), which are strongly connected to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and groups supporting the Syrian government.
A member of the Ministry of Defence was killed and three others injured after the SDF attacked the region close to the Shihhan roundabout in Aleppo, according to Syrian state media.
Hospital officials informed dpa that two women were also killed and a child was hurt due to shelling by the SDF, which targeted residential areas.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the bombardment led to significant fear among locals, especially in areas with high population density.
However, SDF spokesperson Farhad al-Shami stated to dpa that government-aligned groups—such as the Suleiman Shah Division (al-Amshat), the Hamza Division, and the Sultan Murad group—were responsible for the attacks. He mentioned that one civilian was killed and two others injured due to shelling from these groups.
The SDF blamed the government-aligned militias, who are supported by Turkey, for attacking, including Deir Harif in Aleppo province, using mortar rounds, heavy arms, and drones.
A recent gathering of representatives from the SDF and the Syrian government concluded without significant advancement toward a planned military union, as ongoing disputes continue to hinder the integration efforts.
The Kurds, primarily residing in northeastern Syria, reached an agreement in March to incorporate previously autonomous Kurdish areas into the national framework. They constitute the largest ethnic minority in Syria, with the majority of the nation’s oil and gas resources situated in the northeast.
Clashes between Syrian government troops and the SDF have frequently erupted in and near Aleppo in recent weeks, leading to casualties and injuries.
