The Nigerian military has cautioned civilians to be wary of fraudulent online profiles claiming to be linked to or managed by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.
In a statement released by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, on the Nigerian Army’s X account on Friday, it was mentioned that there has been a concerning rise in the actions of dishonest people who establish and manage fake online profiles under the COAS’s name for deceptive reasons.
The Army firmly confirmed that the Chief of Army Staff does not manage or run any official social media account on any website, emphasizing that any account asserting the opposite is false and should be ignored.
As per the statement, “the public is urged to be cautious and watchful, since fake accounts are frequently utilized to deceive unaware people, request money, or disseminate false information on behalf of the Nigerian Army.”
The military advised the public against interacting with, replying to, or spreading material from these accounts, cautioning that such actions might put people at risk of fraud and other illegal activities.
It also revealed that appropriate measures are being implemented to locate and arrest individuals responsible for the fake accounts, with the intention of bringing them to justice under current legislation.
The declaration provided comfort to Nigerians, affirming the Army’s steadfast dedication to defending the lives and assets of residents, along with preserving the nation’s territorial unity, in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
