Lieutenant General Scott Winter from Australia took up his position as Deputy Commander of the U.N. Command (UN Command) on the 9th.

The UN Command stated that the swearing-in ceremony for the Deputy Commander took place at the UN Command headquarters in Camp Humphreys, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, on that day. Winter, the second Australian to assume the role of Deputy Commander, is the fifth military officer from outside the United States to hold this position.

Winter said, “I feel truly privileged to work with the three commands—the UN Command, U.S. Forces Korea, and the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command—during a period when regional security is facing a crucial moment.” A farewell event for departing Deputy Commander Derek Macaulay, a Canadian Army Lieutenant General, took place on the same day.

Since the Armistice Agreement was signed on July 27, 1953, the UN Command has had the duty of overseeing the armistice and assisting the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command in case of emergencies. With seven UN Command rear bases located in Japan, military personnel and equipment from 18 nations that contribute troops, including the United States, are stationed on the Korean Peninsula.
