Lalmonirhat, Jan 9 – According to local reports, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) tried to build a new road during the night near the Khalishakothal border in Fulbari upazila of Kurigram, very close to the Bangladesh border. The proposed road was approximately one kilometer long.
Informed by locals, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officials reached the location and compelled the BSF to stop the construction. The Indian side started slowly taking away the building materials.
A confrontation between BGB and BSF took place on Thursday afternoon close to International Main Pillar 934.
Subedar Abu Taher, the camp commander of Balarhat under the Lalmonirhat-15 Battalion, represented BGB, whereas the BSF was headed by Inspector Dipak Kumar from the Megh Narayan Kuthi camp in Sahibganj, Cooch Behar district.
As per BGB and local reports, a primary road linking Kurshahat and Dinhata in the Cooch Behar district lies within Indian territory, situated 50-120 yards from the Bangladesh border over a 1 km section from Pillar 934-1S to 934-11S. The BSF has been conducting night-time construction activities near the existing road in recent days.
Local inhabitants, Mojir Rahman and Nur Alam Lipu, mentioned that the BSF had been constructing the new paved road for 2-3 days. The BGB heightened its patrols as a reaction.
Subedar Abu Taher verified that the flag meeting occurred and that BGB patrols are still keeping an eye on the region. Subedar Naresh Chandra Roy from Shimulbari Camp mentioned that a senior-level flag meeting between BGB and BSF officers could take place in the near future to ensure stability.
